An Interesting Fact About Doctors

I remember when doctors were held in high esteem, when you would think of a doctor as someone smart, rich, and having a very prestigious position in any community.

Think about it, it's easy to picture some ritzy-titzy woman at a cocktail party with a snooty accent  saying, " Yes, my son the doctor." You'd never hear such a woman in the same situation say, " Yes, my son the McDonalds fry cook." just wouldn't happen.

Somehow over time, things changed to where now everything a doctor says or does is controlled entirely by insurance companies. Oh they still make good money, and their moms still brag at cocktail parties, but it's not the same as it was years ago.

Understand, I'm not against doctors, I'm just not that interested in most of the wonderfully colored drugs they seem obligated to push on us, but if blood's gushing out somewhere, Oh Yeah...take me to a doctor.

I had the pleasure of sitting with a world renowned doctor at a convention some years back and she made an astounding point about her colleges. She told me, "Do you understand that out of all the doctors in the world exactly half finished at the top of their class and exactly half finished at the bottom."

Which one do you have ?  People chose a doctor in many different ways, availability, through a friend or family member, by looks, gender, or reputation, even distance from our house. They all have that piece of paper on the wall that assures us they know what their doing, but nothing to signify whether they were the best or just made it.

I should tell you to beware of some serious looks if you ever decide to ask, because I have and they were a bit surprised.

My grandfather was a doctor...the kind that actually made house calls. He was as proud of his bedside manner as he was the piece of paper that hung on the wall of his office that gave him the right to be at your bedside. He died befor I was born yet I still run into people who knew him and admired him, that's really saying something. Every doctor has to gradute at the top or bottom of their class but only a very rare few are remembered generations after they have left us. I wish I could have known the man, I hear he was pretty special. Thanks for the memory, lol

Sounds like your Grandfather was not only a good doctor, but a good man as well. Your right , that does say something when people have good things to say about a person long after they are gone. Matter of fact, maybe it says everything. Hey, maybe today would be a good day to give someone a call, just to bring up his name and ask what they remember ? Thanks Myla

hi michael, very well written article on a subject i have fought against myself, to no avail, and that was prescription pushers, who see 200 patients a day, and give them anything they want. no one wants to hear it, or i didn't squawk loud enough, or to the right people. thought provoking article, thank you for sharing, best regards, sue thom

Thanks Sue, I did think it was an interesting obvious fact when I was told about the half/half factor. I have often told people that felt differently about doctors pushing meds , to go into any doctors office from 8:00 am to noon on a Monday morning and you'll see all the drug reps. with their sample cases. Why do you think each pill is a different color, so the patient can tell the difference ? Nope, so the doctor can. They get a brief bio of the drug and a color code. Pharmacists have to go monthly to learn about all the new drugs out there, they are the ones people need to talk too.

As an ex Manager of Health Centres I could write a book on 'everything you DO NOT WANT TO KNOW about your family Doctor!!!' seriously! From sexually exposing themselves, to fondling staff to defrauding the NHS, being generally negligent and so on and so forth........but then there were good 'uns too ;)
