With all the talk about our slumping economy, jobs being shipped overseas, and the need for two income families, it comes as no surprise that more and more people are looking at the Internet as an additional form of income.

The problem there is that the average Joe (or Jane) has absolutely no idea how or where to begin, and with literally hundreds of "experts" on the subject of Internet marketing, how are you to know what's good or bad ?

I'm always excited whenever I uncover a method, system, or formula that is actually based on facts and can be proven to be useful, one such idea is "Back Lash Trends" or "Backwards Trends" in consumer buying habits.

One thing I learned was that your not going to do very well competing with the top sellers of the latest Hot products. Items like X-box360's, or big screen T.V.'s or the newest computer gadget, unless of course, you have an Uncle that can promise you a hundred of them a week that "fell of the truck."

There is however, an interesting pattern to our societies buying cycle. You see, as we progress with technological gizmos and electronic gadgets, it's almost as if we can "feel" we're getting ahead of ourselves. That cosmic three steps forward, two steps back.

The best example of this "Back Lash Trend" is, with every new wave of techno-advancement is a following wave in consumer spending towards things like camping equipment, patio furniture, gardening, crafts, and outdoor nature type items.

These are not little bleeps on the spending radar, but huge spikes in our buying trends. So for average people looking to enjoy their slice of the billions of dollars spent on the Internet every year, finding your niche isn't as difficult as one may think.

And this is just one aspect of where to look, there are literally thousands and thousands of niches that need to be filled online. Will you make millions , probably not. But if you did put a few hundred or even thousands in your bank account each month......that's not to damn shabby.

Hi Sue, I'd be curious as to WHAT it made you think? I meet people all the time that tell me, " I can't seem to find my niche, what sells online?" It's actually easy to locate niche markets. The first step I teach is letting people know what the potential of "little" markets really are. It blew my mind when a few of these folks let it be known what they were earning in markets like wedding favors, trout fishing, tumble weeds ( yes you read that right) quilting, scrapbooking, and the list goes on. Like anything else a lot of people make this hard. There is research to be done and that's what the majority have no idea how or where to do it. Thanks for your comments Michael

hi michael, it made me think that once i am divorced, hopefully monday, if not, sometime soon after, i might think about doing something on line, i hadn't thought about it before. i like aromatherapy items, oils, candles, unique items, natural items, and maybe can do something at some point. i saw a woman at the post office with a lot of little boxes she was mailing, after reading your article, i was wondering if she might have an online business. anyway, that's what it made me think, but i can't do until i know where i stand. have a great saint pattie's day, best regards, sue

I know exactly what you mean about that lady with lots of little boxes. Now she could have been mailing gifts to soldiers, or girl scout cookies to all her distant relatives that bought from her daughter, but the smart money is on she does ebay. Ebay is a good place to start ,,,maybe, but having your own site is best. There is a formula for picking what's best for you. Good luck on Monday. Michael
